Radiative Efficiency of Collisionless Accretion

چکیده

Radiative efficiency, η ≡ L/Ṁc, of a slowly accreting black hole is estimated using a two-temperature model of accretion. The radiative efficiency depends on the magnetic field strength near the Schwarzschild radius. For weak magnetic fields, β ≡ B/8πp ∼< 10 , the low efficiency η ∼ 10 assumed in some theoretical models is achieved. For β > 10, a significant fraction of viscous heat is dissipated by electrons and radiated away resulting in η > 10. At equipartition magnetic fields, β ∼ 1, we estimate η ∼ 10. Collisionless Halos Around Black Holes

When a black hole accretes slowly, the radiative cooling of the infalling gas is weak and the accretion disk does not form. A hot collisionless quasi-spherical halo is formed instead. The properties of such halos are discussed. The rate of accretion, the radiative efficiency, and the temperature and density near the hole are evaluated.

Electron Heating in Hot Accretion Flows

Local (shearing box) simulations of the nonlinear evolution of the magnetorotational instability in a collisionless plasma show that angular momentum transport by pressure anisotropy (p⊥ 6= p‖, where the directions are defined with respect to the local magnetic field) is comparable to that due to the Maxwell and Reynolds stresses. Pressure anisotropy, which is effectively a large-scale viscosit...

Jet-Driven Disk Accretion in Low Luminosity AGN?

We explore an accretion model for low luminosity AGN (LLAGN) that attributes the low radiative output to a low mass accretion rate, Ṁa, rather than a low radiative efficiency. In this model, electrons are assumed to drain energy from the ions as a result of collisionless plasma microinstabilities. Consequently, the accreting gas collapses to form a geometrically thin disk at small radii and is ...

Accretion onto Nearby Supermassive Black Holes: Chandra Constraints on the Dominant Cluster Galaxy Ngc 6166

Chandra observations of low-luminosity supermassive black holes in nearby elliptical galaxies provide tight limits on both their nuclear luminosities and on their Bondi accretion rates. We examine Chandra constraints on NGC 6166, the dominant galaxy in the cluster Abell 2199, which hosts a ∼ 10 M⊙ black hole. We measure a nuclear X-ray luminosity Lx,1 keV ∼ 10 40 erg s and show that the density...

Shearing Box Simulations of the Mri in a Collisionless Plasma

We describe local shearing box simulations of turbulence driven by the magnetorotational instability (MRI) in a collisionless plasma. Collisionless effects may be important in radiatively inefficient accretion flows, such as near the black hole in the Galactic Center. The MHD version of ZEUS is modified to evolve an anisotropic pressure tensor. A fluid closure approximation is used to calculate...
